
Srinagar: A 5.0 magnitude earthquake struck northeastern Afghanistan late Tuesday night, sending tremors across the Kashmir Valley.
According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the epicenter was located 72 km southeast of Fayzabad at coordinates 36.5546° N, 71.0004° E, with a depth of 261.2 km. The earthquake occurred at 11:44 PM IST.
United States Geological Survey (USGS), a scientific agency within the U.S. Department of the Interior, however pegged the magnitude of the tremor at 5.1. Notably, the NCS had earlier reported the seismic activity as 6.1.
Residents across north Kashmir and other parts of the Valley reported feeling the tremors, which lasted for a few seconds, prompting panic in several neighborhoods.
Initial reports indicate no casualties, injuries, or significant property damage from anywhere in Valley.
