5 drug peddlers arrested in Anantnag; contraband substance seized: Police

Anantnag, May 01: As crackdown on drug trafficking under ‘Nasha Mukht J&K Abhiyan’ intensifies across Jammu and Kashmir, Police in Anantnag on Friday said they have booked and arrested five drug peddlers under NDPS Act in the district.

“Continuing its sustained drive against drug trafficking, Anantnag Police has achieved multiple successes across the district, leading to the registration of 04 NDPS cases and arrest of 05 accused persons,” a police spokesperson said in a staetement.

The statement said that a naka party of Police Station Kokernag intercepted a suspicious Maruti Suzuki Fronx (JK03Q-4233) at Sagam Kokernag which vehicle attempted to flee but was tactfully stopped. Two occupants of the vehicle, identified as Aqib Nissar Rangraze of Anantnag and Umar Yousuf Mahroo of Kishtwar, were apprehended and 13.36 grams of heroin-like substance was recovered from their possession. Accordingly, FIR No. 39/2026 under relevant sections of NDPS Act was registered.

Similarly, police said, at Mehmoodabad Bridge, a naka party of Police Station Dooru apprehended one individual identified as Rameez Bashir Bhat of Tilwangund and recovered 2.65 grams of heroin-like substance from him during search, leading to registration of FIR No. 64/2026.

In another action, a police party from PP Verinag during patrolling at Gutligund apprehended one Sabzar Ahmed Sofi of Hallan Verinag. During search, 92 grams of charas powder and 20 grams of charas were recovered. An FIR No. 63/2026 under NDPS Act stands registered at Police Station Dooru.

Further, a police party from Police Station Larnoo during routine patrolling intercepted one Adil Ahmad Sheikh of Larnoo at Khrety Lovlupora. police said, upon search, 2.300 kilograms of ganja and 18 grams of charas were recovered. Accordingly, FIR No. 23/2026 under NDPS Act was registered.

“All accused persons have been arrested and further investigation in all cases is underway,” the spokesperson said.

Anantnag Police reiterated its committed to eradicating the menace of drugs and urges the general public to cooperate and share information regarding drug-related activities.
