Srinagar, Dec 18: CCTVs are turning into digital peep-holes, and weak passwords might be exposing homes and office surveillance systems in Kashmir to hacking.

The Jammu and Kashmir Police have issued a public advisory cautioning residents about the risks posed by weak passwords on CCTV cameras, warning that poorly secured surveillance systems can become a serious threat to personal privacy, particularly for women at home.

In a post shared on microblogging site ‘X’, the Police said that while CCTV cameras are installed to enhance safety and security, weak or default passwords can make them vulnerable to unauthorised access and misuse.

“CCTV provides security, but a weak password can become a serious threat to privacy, especially for women at home,” the Police said in their message.

The advisory urged people who have CCTV cameras installed in their homes or offices to immediately change default passwords and ensure that strong, unique passwords are used.

The Police also recommended reviewing camera settings regularly to prevent hacking or unauthorised viewing.

“CCTV provides security, but a weak password can become a serious threat to privacy, especially for women at home. If you have CCTV installed in your house or office, change your password immediately. Create a strong and unique password and keep your camera settings secure,” J&K Police said in a post on X.

“Cybercriminals are increasingly targeting these systems to gain unauthorised access to live feeds, recorded footage, or even personal data. While no system is completely immune, understanding the ways hackers can breach your cameras and taking proactive measures can significantly reduce risks,” Cyber Police officials said. “From using strong passwords and secure networks to choosing high-quality equipment and monitoring for unusual activity, there are practical steps homeowners can take to protect their security systems and ensure their homes remain safe from digital threats.”

The officials said that protecting your security system starts with implementing basic cyber hygiene and investing in reliable equipment.

They said there was an urgent need for high-quality, reputable security equipment, as cheaper or low-quality cameras may lack robust encryption, making them vulnerable.

“Choose systems with end-to-end encryption and regularly updated firmware. Investing in quality devices ensures both longevity and stronger security standards,” the officials said.

“If you suspect that your security system has been hacked, taking immediate action is crucial to protect your home and data,” the Cyber Police officials said.

They said that the first step is to disconnect your system from its main power supply, which can prevent the hacker from continuing to access your cameras or account.

“Next, change all relevant passwords, including those for your security account, router, and any connected devices, to block unauthorised entry. It is also important to contact the manufacturer of your security system to report the suspicious activity and seek guidance on securing your devices further,” the Cyber Police officials said. “Finally, if you believe the intrusion may involve malicious intent, Cyber Police can help prevent potential threats or misuse of your personal data and ensure that the situation is properly investigated.”
