
Kupwara, Jun 05: World Environment Day was observed across Karnah on Thursday with an awareness programme and plantation drive aimed at promoting environmental conservation and encouraging sustainable practices among the public.
The event, organised by the Sub-Divisional Administration Karnah, witnessed participation from students, government officials, civil society representatives and local residents. Speakers highlighted the importance of protecting natural resources, maintaining ecological balance and adopting environmentally responsible behaviour in daily life.
As part of the observance, a plantation drive was carried out at the Forest Department enclosure in Tar Behak, where participants planted saplings to promote afforestation and enhance green cover in the area.
Addressing the gathering, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate Karnah stressed the need for collective efforts to safeguard the environment and called upon citizens, particularly the younger generation, to play an active role in conservation initiatives. Officials of the Forest Department also spoke about the importance of afforestation and biodiversity preservation in ensuring long-term ecological sustainability.
A pledge was administered to participants, reaffirming their commitment to protecting the environment, reducing pollution, conserving natural resources and promoting eco-friendly practices.
Among those present were the Deputy Commander of 104 Infantry Brigade, Tehsildar Karnah, SHO Karnah, ZEO Karnah, Forest Department officers, officials from various departments, students and members of the public.
Officials said the programme was aimed at strengthening environmental awareness and encouraging greater public participation in efforts to build a cleaner and greener future.
