SRINAGAR: A woman has been arrested in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district for allegedly killing her husband. Police officials said the body of Bittu Ram, a resident of Dhar Dugnoo village in Billawar, was recovered from a stream in October last year, according to News Arena India.
The victim had suffered multiple injuries to his face and body, and a ligature mark was found around his neck, indicating death by strangulation.
Following the recovery of the body, police registered a case under relevant provisions of law. A scientific examination of the crime scene was conducted, and several exhibits were seized during the investigation.
Officials said evidence was collected and several suspects were questioned before the victim’s wife, Simro Devi, was identified as the prime accused.
During questioning, the accused allegedly confessed to her involvement in the crime. A police spokesperson said she disclosed that an extramarital relationship had resulted in frequent disputes and strained relations between the couple. She reportedly admitted to strangling her husband with a rope following these conflicts.
Police said material evidence linked to the offence was also recovered during the probe.
Bittu Ram had gone missing on the morning of October 19, 2024, after leaving home for coaching. His decomposed body was later found stuffed in a sack in a pond on the evening of October 21, 2024, raising suspicion of foul play and prompting the launch of a murder investigation, News Arena India reported.
Under Indian law, intentional murder is punishable under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code or Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which provides for death or life imprisonment along with a fine, generally applied in the “rarest of rare” cases.
