Bandipora, Feb 1: Former legislator Usman Majid has urged the National Conference government to fulfill its election promises in the upcoming UT Budget and demanded that the proposed National Law University (NLU) be established at Bandipora.

Speaking with mediapersons, Majid said it has been one over a year for the NC government in power, adding that “people continue waiting for poll promises to be fulfilled.” The former MLA highlighted the plight of daily-wage workers. He said the ruling party had campaigned on a promise to provide lakhs of jobs and immediately regularise daily wagers.

However, he expressed fear that the government might be planning to dismiss them instead. “I fear signals are emerging that daily wagers might be removed,” he said. “I hope this budget includes a provision to regularise them because this involves thousands of people.”

Commenting on NLU, Majid said Jammu already has many premier institutions and the new university should be in the Kashmir Valley to ensure regional balance. “To create a balance, it is good to have this institution here. Bandipora is a beautiful place. Where could be a better location?” He also pressed the government on its pledges for free electricity units and gas cylinders. Majid warned that inflation is high and people have limited ways to earn money.  He said the budget must be “pro-people” and should not put any extra burden on the poor.
