Ramban, Jan 15: Public transport services remained suspended in Udhampur and Reasi districts on Thursday as transporters observed a complete chakajam in protest against the government’s decision to conduct vehicle fitness inspections exclusively in Jammu.

All modes of public transport, including buses, minibuses, taxis and Sumos, stayed off the roads, causing widespread inconvenience to commuters.

Passengers, particularly those intending to travel to Jammu and other places were left stranded. Several commuters in Udhampur, Ramnagar said the absence of public transport forced them to postpone their journeys or make alternative arrangements.

Transporters said the strike was called after the authorities failed to revoke the order despite repeated representations.

“We conveyed our objections well in advance, but no action was taken, leaving us with no option but to go on strike,” said a transporter.

According to the transporters, a recent directive issued by the Transport Department requires vehicle owners from Udhampur and Reasi districts to travel to Jammu for mandatory fitness certification.

They questioned the rationale behind the move, pointing out that fitness services were previously available within their respective districts.

The transporters argued that travelling to Jammu for routine fitness checks imposes an unnecessary financial burden and creates logistical difficulties.

They demanded the immediate restoration of local fitness services in Udhampur and Reasi, as was the practice earlier.

The shutdown partially disrupted normal life in both districts, with residents facing difficulties in commuting for work, medical appointments and other essential needs.

Meanwhile, Assistant Regional Transport Officer (ARTO) Udhampur assured the protesting transporters that the issue would be resolved within the next few days.

Transport Union leaders later in the evening announced that the strike had been temporarily called off following assurances from the ARTO that senior transport officials would visit Udhampur on Friday to resolve the matter.
