Srinagar: A 16-year-old boy was seriously injured after being attacked by a black bear in Batagund Mawer area of Handwara in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Friday afternoon.

The victim, identified as Danish Nabi Tali, son of Gh. Nabi Tali, was reportedly in his apple orchard when the bear attacked, leaving him with grievous injuries. He was rushed to GMC Handwara for treatment.

Locals expressed strong resentment over what they termed the Wildlife Department’s inaction, saying a female bear with two cubs has been roaming in the area for over a week. “Despite repeated complaints, no preventive measures have been taken. The situation poses a serious threat to human lives,” residents said.

They urged the authorities to intervene immediately to prevent incidents of the type in the area.
