SRINAGAR: The Supreme Court on Thursday granted bail to Kashmiri separatist leader Shabir Ahmad Shah in a terror funding case in which he was arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in June 2019.

According to reports, a bench comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta allowed Shah’s bail plea after hearing arguments from both sides, noting certain irregularities in the trial proceedings and his prolonged incarceration. The court said a detailed order outlining the bail conditions will be issued later.

Shah was represented by senior advocate Colin Gonsalves, while senior advocate Siddharth Luthra appeared on behalf of the NIA during the hearing.

Earlier, on September 4 last year, the apex court had declined to grant interim bail and had sought a response from the NIA on Shah’s plea challenging a Delhi High Court order of June 12, 2025, which had rejected his bail request.

The case relates to a 2017 NIA probe in which several individuals were accused of allegedly raising funds through illegal channels, including hawala, to fuel unrest and militant activities in Jammu and Kashmir. (KNC)
