Srinagar: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Tuesday inaugurated the revamped Amira Kadal in the city centre, marking the formal opening of the historic structure as a pedestrian bridge under the Srinagar Smart City Project, officials said.
The bridge, among the oldest in Srinagar, has been redesigned to facilitate pedestrian movement while preserving its heritage character along the Jhelum riverfront.
Officials said the redevelopment is part of the ongoing efforts to improve urban mobility and expand public recreational spaces in the capital.
The Lieutenant Governor was accompanied by Divisional Commissioner Kashmir Anshul Garg, Inspector General of Police Kashmir Zone V.K Birdi, Deputy Commissioner Srinagar Akshay Labroo, Chief Executive Officer Srinagar Smart City Limited, MLA Lal Chowk Ahsan Pardesi and other senior officers.
Equipped with smart lighting, seating areas and improved walkways, the bridge is expected to emerge as a significant public landmark connecting Lal Chowk with adjoining commercial hubs, in addition to serving as a cultural promenade for residents and visitors.
The Srinagar Smart City Project has undertaken multiple riverfront and heritage-linked infrastructure works in recent months with an aim to reshape the urban landscape and enhance public amenities, officials added.
