Srinagar: Srinagar Police on Tuesday said that following credible information about the circulation of ‘false and misleading content’ on digital and social media platforms, cases have been registered against (sitting Member Parliament Srinagar) Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi and (politician) Junaid Azim Mattu. The content, the Police said, intended to create fear, disturb public order, and incite unlawful activities.
In a statement, the police said the material appears to carry distorted narratives and unverified information capable of causing public unrest and societal discord. Such acts of deliberate misinformation are viewed as a threat to peace, security, and overall stability.
“FIR No. 02/2026 and FIR No. 03/2026 have been lodged under Sections 197(1)(d) and 353(1)(b) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at Cyber Police Station, Srinagar. Investigations into both cases have been initiated and are ongoing.”
The Police reiterated its commitment to maintaining public peace and law and order. Citizens are advised to verify information through official and credible sources before sharing online and to refrain from circulating unverified content that could disrupt public order or social harmony.
“Further legal action will follow as warranted under law,” reads the statement.
