SRINAGAR: A Srinagar court has directed the registration of an FIR against a Pattan resident accused of deceiving several women on the pretext of marriage, observing that the allegations disclose serious cognizable offences and a consistent pattern of fraud.
As per details, the order was passed by the Special Mobile Magistrate PTE Srinagar in connection with multiple complaints. The applicants in the case were represented by advocate Rehaan Gowhar.
The court was informed that the accused allegedly used social media and personal contacts to approach women, gain their trust and lure them into relationships with promises of marriage.
The court observed that after establishing such relationships, the accused reportedly sought money from victims on various pretexts, including fabricated medical emergencies involving his family members. In several cases, he is alleged to have collected substantial amounts using similar tactics.
It was further alleged that the accused neither returned the money nor honoured his commitments, and instead resorted to threats when confronted. Victims were allegedly intimidated with consequences such as defamation and misuse of personal data, discouraging them from seeking legal recourse.
The court also took note of allegations that the accused misrepresented his identity, including posing as a government official, to build credibility and exploit victims emotionally as well as financially.
Observing that multiple complaints indicate a deliberate and systematic modus operandi, the court held that offences such as cheating, impersonation and criminal intimidation are prima facie established.
Expressing concern over police inaction, the court noted that despite complaints, no FIR had initially been registered and only preventive measures were taken. It emphasized that registration of an FIR is mandatory when cognizable offences are disclosed.
Accordingly, the court directed the SHO of Police Station Ahmad Nagar, Srinagar, to register an FIR and proceed with investigation strictly in accordance with law. The application was disposed of with directions for immediate compliance. (KNC)
