Jammu, Feb 5: The Jammu and Kashmir Government has announced plans to roll out special sports initiatives for transgender persons, senior citizens, and specially-abled athletes, positioning sports as an inclusive tool for holistic development and social well-being, according to the Economic Survey 2025-26 tabled in the J&K Legislative Assembly on Thursday.

The J&K Economic Survey notes that the government aims to expand the scope of sports participation beyond competitive youth athletics, with targeted programmes designed to bring marginalised and under-represented groups into organised physical activity and structured sporting ecosystems.

“Government aims to expand its focus on inclusivity, with special initiatives for senior citizens, housewives, transgender individuals, and specially-abled athletes,” the Survey states, adding that the focus will be on accessibility, participation and long-term wellness.

These measures, the Survey says, are aimed at ensuring equitable access to sports infrastructure and training opportunities across age groups and social categories.

The Survey adds that plans include further developing high-performance centres and promoting sports-related research to preserve traditional games. “By leveraging sports as a tool for holistic youth development and societal well-being, the Government is paving the way for a healthier, more prosperous future,” the Survey adds.
