The government has a larger objective behind revocation of detention of environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk who was booked under National Security Act in September last year for unprecedented violence in Leh town that shocked the nation . That this could happen in the most peaceful places in the country was extremely shocking and worrying for the government which had invested so much in the region’s development and progress.
Sonam Wangchuk who was at the centre of the protests as his speeches were deemed as provocative aimed at inciting the youth to go on rampage on September 24, 2025. The violence left four youth dead and more than 160 others wounded . Curfew had to be imposed to control the situation , something that Ladakh had not experienced in the recent memory .
At stake is peace of the cold region that made the Ministry of home Affairs, under the leadership of Union Home Minister Amit Shah , to take a decision that would go long way in encouraging peace-loving people of Ladakh region to go in for dialogue to put forward their demands in an atmosphere of mutual trust . The whole credit should go to the Home Minister who took care of the situation and its remedial measures all the time .
Amit Shah has been directly involved in Ladakh affairs after the region was granted its long-aspired Union Territory status in August 2019, which came into effect on October 31st, 2019 . There were two major planks on which the Home Ministry worked – reinforce the identity and culture of the region and embracing it in the Indian national ism . Second , the development , the absence of which was felt across the region prior to Reorganization of J&K Act that gave UT status to the people of Ladakh .
There was a celebration all around in Leh district and parts of Kargil district . But later when they discovered that they had what they wanted – the UT – but their political representation was minimal . They had two autonomous hill councils, but no legislative body like Assembly . That triggered some apprehensions , which were fuelled by some of the vested interests who wanted to create a situation in the cold desert region , that too at a time when nation was dealing with a prolonged military standoff with China in eastern Ladakh . That obviously meant that the demands for the statehood and sixth schedule for the entire Ladakh region were being used to divert the Government’s real-time attention .
Despite these elements , Government of India initiated dialogue with the two bodies – Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance . A high-powered committee was formed in the Home Ministry to hold the talks . While the talks were going on , the things got complicated as the demands kept on piling up.
After the September 24th violence , the Ministry of Home Affairs did not give up the track of dialogue. It invited the leaders of Ladakh and held talks with them . They were assured all the issues would be addressed in free and fair manner. Now the MHA has gone a step forward beyond the assurances and the work it has already done in the UT of Ladakh to lift the living standards of the region’s people .
Today’s decision has been welcomed by one and all but at the same time the Lieutenant Governor Vinai Saxena has cautioned that there is no space for agitation and violence . It is a note for all those who think that release of Sonam Wangchuk is a victory of what happened on September 24th. Far from that. It is extending hand of peace to all and no subversion will be tolerated .
The official release is self- explanatory . It reads : “ In the backdrop of serious law and order situation that arose in the peace-loving town of Leh on 24 September 2025 ,Sonam Wangchuk was detained on 26 September 2025 under the provisions of the National Security Act ( NSA) pursuant to an order issued by the District Magistrate , Leh with a view to maintaining public order . Sonam Wangchuk has already undergone nearly half of the period of detention under the Act.”
The real reason that official release stated becomes very clear in government’s commitment to foster peace in Ladakh . “ The Government has been actively engaging with various stakeholders and community leaders in Ladakh with a view to addressing the aspirations and concerns of the people of the region. However, the prevailing atmosphere of bandhs and protests has been detrimental to the peace-loving character of the society and has adversely affected various sections of the community, including students, job aspirants, businesses, tour operators and tourists and overall economy.”
The MHA spokesman made it clear that the “ Government remains committed to fostering an environment of peace, stability, and mutual trust in Ladakh so as to facilitate constructive and meaningful dialogue with all stakeholders. In furtherance of this objective, and after due consideration, the Government has decided to revoke the detention of Shri Sonam Wangchuk with immediate effect by exercising the powers available under the National Security Act.”

“ The Government reiterates its commitment to providing all necessary safeguards for Ladakh. It remains hopeful that the issues concerning the region will be resolved through constructive engagement and dialogue, including through the mechanism of the High-Powered Committee as well as other appropriate platforms.”
This is the maximum Government could offer to the people of Ladakh at the moment .
