SRINAGAR: In a significant push for youth-led innovation in Jammu and Kashmir’s agricultural sector, the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K) is making waves through its JKCIP Incubation and Start-up Cell. Established under the IFAD-sponsored Jammu and Kashmir Competitiveness Improvement Programme (JKCIP), the cell is creating opportunities for young entrepreneurs to convert agri-based ideas into viable business models.
Positioned as the Union Territory’s key entrepreneurship hub, the Startup Cell is transforming the agri-entrepreneurship landscape with structured mentoring, incubation support, and technology integration. Its focus is not only on productivity but on building an inclusive and resilient agri-value chain by supporting start-ups from idea-stage to market readiness.
The cell aims to bridge the structural and educational gaps that often hinder entrepreneurial growth in the region. It offers personalised mentorship from scientists, industry leaders and successful entrepreneurs, alongside financial support such as seed funding and capital investment to help start-ups navigate the critical early phase. Capacity-building workshops on financial literacy, idea pitching, technology adoption and export preparedness are core elements of its support framework.
Young entrepreneurs benefit from exposure to national and international trade fairs and e-commerce platforms, helping them expand from local markets to national and global networks. Events like boot camps, hackathons and ideathons are routinely organised to foster creativity and problem-solving among youth in urban and rural districts.
The initiative aligns with larger national goals such as Atmanirbhar Bharat, Startup India and the National Innovation and Startup Policy (NISP), but remains sensitive to the distinct economic and ecological challenges of the region. It actively promotes digital tools, IoT solutions, climate-smart farming and bio-based innovations within the traditional agricultural framework.
According to the team behind the initiative, the Startup Cell is more than just a resource centre—it is a movement that aims to institutionalise innovation and self-reliance across Jammu and Kashmir’s younger generation. By offering a blend of old wisdom and modern tools, the initiative is helping reshape the region’s economic future and turning job-seekers into job creators.
As the ecosystem continues to grow, it signals a powerful message to every aspiring innovator in the Valley: the future of agriculture and entrepreneurship is being built at home, by those who dare to imagine and act.
