SRINAGAR: SKIMS has said it has added a major new academic milestone to its medical education portfolio with the launch of Jammu Kashmir’s first super-speciality DNB Cardiac Anaesthesia programme, marking a significant expansion of advanced cardiac training within the Union Territory.

The Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, already regarded as the region’s premier centre for high-end medical care and research, said the new super-speciality is equivalent to the DM Cardiac Anaesthesia and brings structured, nationally accredited training in cardiothoracic anaesthesia to aspiring specialists within Jammu and Kashmir for the first time.

According to SKIMS, the three-year course is designed to train cardiac thoracic anesthesiologists capable of managing the full continuum of perioperative care for complex cardiothoracic and vascular cases. Trainees will receive immersive exposure in cardiothoracic operating theatres, cardiac ICUs, high-dependency units, advanced catheterisation laboratories, interventional cardiology areas, and non-operating room cardiac procedures. The institute said the curriculum has been structured to develop expertise in hemodynamic management, transesophageal echocardiography, perioperative cardiac optimisation, mechanical circulatory support, and intensive postoperative care.

Director SKIMS and Ex-Officio Secretary to the Government, Professor Mohammad Ashraf Ganie, congratulated the university and said the launch of the programme represents a critical step in strengthening subspecialty cardiac services in the Union Territory. He said the programme reflects the collective effort of multiple academic and accreditation teams within SKIMS.

The Director conveyed special appreciation to Professor GM Gulzar, Dean, Medical Faculty, for his guidance; Professor Ajaz A. Malik, Head of the SKIMS Accreditation Centre, and his team for ensuring full compliance with national standards; Professor Showkat A. Guroo, Associate Dean and Head of Anaesthesiology, for leading academic expansion within the department; and Dr Talib Khan, Additional Professor and Senior Consultant in Cardiovascular and Thoracic Anesthesiology, for his contributions.

SKIMS has said the introduction of the DNB Cardiac Anaesthesia course marks a transformative moment for both medical education and advanced cardiothoracic services in Jammu Kashmir, reinforcing its mission to build a highly trained specialist workforce and deliver care aligned with national and global standards.
