SRINAGAR: A severe cold wave tightened its grip over Jammu Kashmir and Ladakh, with most areas recording a sharp drop in minimum temperatures, leaving several regions well below the freezing point.

In Kashmir Valley, Srinagar registered a low of –4.4°C, marking one of the coldest nights of the season. Other areas also witnessed severe chill, with Pahalgam at –5.6°C, Kupwara –5.0°C, and both Pampore and Anantnag falling to –6.0°C. Shopian recorded the lowest in the Valley at –6.6°C, while Baramulla settled at –6.4°C. The ski destination of Gulmarg recorded –1.4°C. Qazigund and Awantipora registered –3.0°C and –4.4°C respectively. Zojila Pass experienced extreme cold at –15.0°C, and Zethan Rafiabad fell to –5.5°C.

In Jammu region, winter chill deepened as Jammu city recorded 8.8°C. High-altitude areas remained significantly colder, with Banihal at –0.7°C, Bhaderwah at 0.3°C, and Samba at 1.9°C. Rajouri and Udhampur recorded 1.5°C and 3.0°C respectively, while Batote (4.5°C), Ramban (4.2°C), Kishtwar (4.0°C), Reasi (6.4°C), Doda (4.5°C) and Kathua (7.4°C) experienced moderate cold. Jammu Airport recorded 8.3°C.

In Ladakh, temperatures plunged to severe lows, with Nyoma recording the coldest minimum at –16.3°C. Drass (–12.4°C), Padum (–12.6°C), Tangste (–12.7°C), Upshi (–12.8°C), and Chuchot (–10.9°C) also reported freezing conditions. Leh recorded –9.2°C, Kargil –8.5°C, and Nubra Valley –8.6°C, while Stakna and Khaltse recorded –9.8°C and –8.1°C respectively. Garkone settled at –2.7°C.

Meteorological department have warned residents to take precautions as the cold wave is likely to continue, with frost and icy conditions expected across higher reaches of the Union Territories.
