Shopian, Dec 29: In an effort to improve market access for traditional artisans, the Ministry of MSME, through its Srinagar-based District Facilitation Office, on Monday organised a marketing and entrepreneurship orientation programme under the PM Vishwakarma scheme in Shopian.

The programme, held at the Mini-Secretariat, was organised in collaboration with the district administration and drew participation from artisans, craftsmen and trainees from technical institutions in the district.

Additional District Development Commissioner Shopian, Nasir Ahmed Lone, who presided over the event, said local artisans need stronger marketing and entrepreneurial skills to compete beyond local markets. He said traditional skills alone are no longer sufficient and must be supported by branding, promotion and market linkage to ensure sustainable livelihoods.

Experts from the Islamic University of Science and Technology briefed participants on advertising, trade promotion, branding and sales strategies relevant to artisan-led enterprises. The sessions focused on practical methods to improve product visibility, develop brand identity and use modern marketing tools to reach wider consumer bases.

Assistant Director MSME Saheel Alaqaband said innovation and quality improvement are essential for traditional artisans to survive in competitive markets. He stressed the need for entrepreneurship-oriented training so that artisans can convert skills into viable businesses rather than remain dependent on local demand.

Officials said the programme was aimed at creating awareness about the objectives and benefits of the PM Vishwakarma scheme, particularly its focus on skill upgradation, financial support and market-oriented training for artisan entrepreneurs.
