Srinagar: Ganderbal Police have cracked two cases of livestock theft within days, recovering sheep worth lakhs and arresting three accused persons involved in the crime.
A police official said that two separate complaints were received at Police Station Kheerbawani and Police Station Kangan on September 8 and September 11. Complainants Jalal-ud-din, son of Abdul Salam, resident of Kokagund Sehpora, and Wahid Ahmad (Bakerwal), son of Haji Noorani, resident of Chadrakote and presently at Hayan Kangan, reported that during the nights of September 3-4 and September 5-6, unidentified thieves trespassed into their cowsheds at Kokagund Sehpora and Hayan Palpora, stealing a total of 37 sheep.
Accordingly, FIR No. 31/2025 and FIR No. 63/2025 were registered under relevant sections of law at PS Kheerbawani and PS Kangan, and investigations were launched.
Acting under the directions of SSP Ganderbal Khalil Ahmad Poswal, special police teams were constituted under the supervision of DySP Headquarters Ganderbal and SDPO Kangan, led by SHO Kheerbawani Gulzar Ahmad and SHO Kangan Lateef Ahmad.
During the investigation, SHO Kheerbawani’s team apprehended one suspect, Shabir Ahmad Bhat, son of Ghulam Qadir Bhat, resident of Arigoripora Kangan. On sustained questioning, he disclosed having purchased six stolen sheep from Momin Bashir Ganie alias Sahil, son of Bashir Ahmad of Gundi Mohalla Sehpora, along with his associates Basit Bashir and Hilal alias Huzaib of Pehlipora Safapora. Six sheep were recovered on his disclosure, and Shabir Ahmad was arrested.
Following up on leads, accused Momin Bashir was also apprehended. Police recovered vehicle No. JK04D-0256, allegedly used in the commission of the crime.
Separately, the Kangan police team arrested another accused, Gh. Nabi Dar, son of Mohd Akbar Dar, resident of Ruhama Pulwama, and recovered 15 stolen sheep from his possession.
In total, three accused have been arrested and 21 stolen sheep recovered so far, even as police said more arrests and recoveries are expected as the investigation continues.
