Ramban, Aug 13: Security was stepped up across the Ramban district and along the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway on Wednesday ahead of Independence Day, with police, army, and paramilitary forces increasing patrols, setting up checkpoints, and inspecting vehicles at key points, including the Chenani-Nashri and Banihal-Qazigund tunnels.

Official sources said area domination patrolling was increased jointly by the police, with the CRPF and army, and special Nakas were placed on the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway between the Chenani-Nashri and Banihal-Qazigund tunnels for checking vehicles and scrutinising identity cards of passengers, especially suspect persons.

The army and paramilitary police forces were assisting state police in patrolling, and the strength of the force personnel has been increased on vital installations like tunnels, railway stations and the Baglihar Hydroelectric Project in Chanderkote in the district.

The district administration has invited the public to witness the Independence Day function at District Police Lines ground Chandrog Ramban on Friday.

A full dress rehearsal was held in which J&K Police, IRP, Home Guards, Forest Protection Force, students, schoolchildren and Fire and Emergency Department jawans took part.

ADC Ramban Varunjeet Singh took the salute for the contingents and unfurls the national flag.

District administration stated that all the preparations have been completed for celebrating Independence Day.

Meanwhile, SSP appealed to the general public to remain cautious and inform the nearest police post or station in case they suspect any movement of suspicious objects or persons so that the function could be celebrated peacefully.

Meanwhile, the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway remained open for two-way traffic of light and medium vehicles and one-way traffic of heavy vehicles.

Traffic authorities said, subject to fair weather and good road conditions, light and medium vehicles would be allowed to ply on either side towards Srinagar and Jammu on National Highway 44 on Thursday.

They said heavy vehicles would be allowed to ply towards Jammu from Qazigund, Kashmir, on Thursday.
