SRINAGAR: The Srinagar Development Authority on Saturday dismissed rumours that 200 allotted shops are set to be demolished, stating that no such exercise is being planned.

Officials said that the authority has begun collecting data from shopkeepers and building holders who have allegedly raised unauthorised extensions on commercial units allotted to them on rent.

An official said several shopkeepers have constructed additional structures on the premises originally provided to them. Multiple complaints have also been received about these violations, he added.

“The rumours of 200 shops being demolished are baseless. No demolition drive is planned. Notices have been served to many shopkeepers, asking them to explain their position regarding the construction beyond the allotment,” the official said.

He clarified that the properties in question belong to the SDA. “There is no question of demolition. The process at present is restricted to verification and collection of complete data.”

Further action will be taken only after the responses to the notices are examined, the SDA added.
