SRINAGAR: The Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC) Department late Wednesday night reported that the Jhelum river continues to flow above danger levels at several points, but with signs of stabilization at Sangam and indications that Srinagar’s Ram Munshibagh gauge may also stabilise in the coming hours.

At midnight, the Sangam gauge recorded 27.64 feet, nearly unchanged from the 27.65 feet noted at 11:00 pm, signalling a plateau in the rise. In Pampore, the water level stood at 6.77 metres, slightly higher than the 6.73 metres an hour earlier. Srinagar’s Ram Munshibagh gauge rose from 22.13 feet at 11:00 pm to 22.25 feet by midnight, but officials said the pace of increase has slowed, suggesting a possible stabilisation soon.

Further downstream, the Asham gauge showed a sharper rise, climbing from 12.18 feet at 11:00 pm to 12.42 feet by midnight. At Wullar, the water level was at 1576.58 metres, marginally higher than 1576.55 metres recorded an hour earlier.

Among the tributaries, the trend was mixed. At Khudwani, the Vishow Nallah dropped marginally from 10.24 metres to 10.20 metres. Rambiyara at Wachi showed a decline from 5.31 metres to 5.10 metres. The Lidder at Batkoot also receded from 1.21 metres to 1.15 metres, while the Sindh at Doderhama dipped from 3.25 metres to 3.15 metres.

Officials said the overall readings indicate that while the Jhelum is running high, particularly in Srinagar and further downstream, the stabilisation at Sangam is a positive sign and the capital city may also see easing levels soon if the trend continues.
