Srinagar: The Food Safety Department has prohibited the sale of Cremica Digestive biscuits in Anantnag district after laboratory tests found the product unsafe for consumption.

According to an official order issued by the Office of the Assistant Commissioner/Designated Officer, Food Safety Anantnag, a sample of the biscuit, sold under the brand name Cremica Digestive (Lot No. BD10K25), was lifted from the market by the Food Safety Officer, Larnu. The product is manufactured and marketed by M/s Mrs. Bector’s Food Specialities Ltd.

The National Food Laboratory, Ghaziabad, in its report dated January 1, 2026, declared the sample “unsafe” due to the presence of sulphite content exceeding the maximum prescribed limit. Officials said consumption of food items containing sulphite beyond permissible levels may pose a threat to public health.

Citing provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, which prohibit the manufacture and sale of unsafe food, the Designated Officer has invoked powers under Section 36(3)(b) to ban the sale of the product in Anantnag with immediate effect and until further orders.

The order has been issued in the interest of public health, and enforcement agencies have been directed to ensure strict compliance across the district.
