Sakeena Itoo Visits Kulgam, Announces 4 Cr Flood Protection Project, Distributes Sports Kits

SRINAGAR: Minister for Health, Medical Education, Social Welfare and Education, Sakeena Itoo, on Sunday visited Zangalpora village of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district to assess developmental needs and met with residents about their concerns and demands.

Speaking at a public gathering, Itoo emphasized the Omar Abdullah-led government’s commitment to public welfare, stating that inclusive development and people-centric governance remain key priorities. “Our aim is to ensure inclusive growth and effective delivery of essential services at the grassroots level,” she said.

During her visit, Minister engaged with locals and heard their grievances. She assured them of prompt action and stated that the relevant departments would be directed to address the issues raised without delay.

She also informed the gathering that a flood protection project worth ₹4 crore has been sanctioned to protect the area from future flood risks. Besides, she announced that instructions have been given to develop a playfield in the village to enhance recreational facilities.

Residents raised several key demands, including the execution of the flood protection project, the establishment of a Primary Health Centre, and improvement in drinking water supply, either through a dedicated filtration plant or by extending supply from an existing facility in a nearby village.

Other demands included upgrading infrastructure at the local Government High School, increasing staffing in essential departments, and setting up an Animal Husbandry Centre to support the village’s agrarian and livestock-based economy.

The development and expansion of the village playfield also emerged as a major demand, reflecting the community’s interest in promoting sports and youth engagement. As part of the visit, Minister Sakeena distributed sports kits to local players, encouraging greater youth participation in sports and physical activities. (JKNS)
