SRINAGAR: National Conference Additional General Secretary and former Minister Ajay Kumar Sadhotra on Friday described the Jammu and Kashmir Budget 2026–27, presented by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in the Legislative Assembly, as a balanced, forward-looking and growth-oriented financial plan aimed at inclusive development across the Union Territory.

In a statement issued here, Sadhotra said the budget reflects the government’s commitment to fulfilling the promises made in the National Conference’s election manifesto and outlines a clear roadmap to ensure that governance benefits reach all sections of society and every region of Jammu and Kashmir.

He said the budget had been prepared with “sensitivity, responsibility and foresight,” balancing fiscal discipline with welfare measures. According to him, the proposals address the aspirations of farmers, youth, women, employees, traders, daily wagers and marginalised communities.

Sadhotra said special focus had been placed on resolving long-pending socio-economic issues of daily wagers, casual labourers and need-based workers. He said the measures proposed in the budget acknowledge their contribution and are expected to provide relief to thousands of families.

Welcoming provisions related to subsidised gas cylinders, he said the initiative would ease the burden on economically weaker households amid rising prices and offer direct support to domestic budgets.

He also highlighted what he described as equitable regional allocations, stating that the budget ensures balanced development of Jammu, Kashmir and their sub-regions while addressing historical disparities.

Referring to infrastructure, Sadhotra said increased investments in roads, power, water supply and urban amenities would strengthen the foundation for long-term economic growth and improve living standards.

He appreciated the emphasis on employment generation, youth empowerment and skill development, saying that targeted spending on education, entrepreneurship and start-ups would help tap the potential of the younger population.

The National Conference leader said sectors such as agriculture, horticulture, tourism and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) had received focused attention and were expected to boost the local economy, generate jobs and enhance incomes in rural and semi-urban areas.

He also welcomed enhanced allocations for healthcare and education, calling them key to sustainable development and human capital formation.

Terming the document a reflection of good governance and accountability, Sadhotra said effective implementation of the proposals would help accelerate Jammu and Kashmir’s progress towards peace, stability and economic growth.

“The Budget 2026–27 is not just a statement of numbers, but a roadmap for a better and more equitable future of Jammu and Kashmir,” he added.
