SRINAGAR: The fisheries sector in Jammu and Kashmir has recorded significant financial activity, with the Government allocating over Rs 49.97 crore during 2024–25, of which Rs 42.78 crore has been utilised, generating a total revenue of Rs 10.28 crore, indicating steady returns and expanding aquaculture activity across districts.

Official figures show that the highest allocations were made in districts with strong fisheries potential, particularly in the Kashmir division. Anantnag emerged as the top-funded district with Rs 9.45 crore allocated and Rs 7.40 crore utilised, generating Rs 3.62 crore in revenue, making it the leading contributor in terms of earnings. Srinagar also reported substantial activity with Rs 5.14 crore allocated, utilisation of Rs 4.24 crore, and revenue generation of over Rs 1.04 crore.

Bandipora and Baramulla also featured among the top-performing districts. Bandipora recorded Rs 6.65 crore in allocation, utilisation of over Rs 5.09 crore, and revenue of Rs 0.81 crore, while Baramulla generated Rs 0.37 crore against utilisation of Rs 3.11 crore. Budgam and Kulgam showed efficient fund usage with near-complete utilisation and revenues of Rs 0.43 crore and Rs 0.45 crore respectively.

Among smaller districts, Ganderbal stood out for efficiency, utilising almost its entire allocation of Rs 0.72 crore and generating a comparatively high revenue of Rs 0.50 crore, indicating strong productivity relative to investment.

In the Jammu division, the Jammu district itself led in revenue generation with Rs 1.04 crore, despite utilisation of Rs 3.03 crore out of an allocation of Rs 4.17 crore. Udhampur also performed strongly, generating Rs 0.49 crore, while Kathua, Rajouri and Doda contributed moderate revenues aligned with their allocations and utilisation levels.

Overall, the data reflects a balanced distribution of funds across districts, with higher returns concentrated in areas with established fisheries infrastructure and favourable aquatic resources. Officials indicated that the sector continues to be supported through targeted funding and development initiatives aimed at enhancing fish production, livelihood generation and rural income across Jammu and Kashmir
