
SRINAGAR: Tributes have poured in from across Jammu and Kashmir following the passing away of renowned educationist and social activist Professor ML Tikoo (Malla), who died of cardiac arrest at his residence in Roop Nagar, Jammu, on December 25, 2025. He was originally from Bijbehara in south Kashmir and was widely regarded as a respected intellectual and community figure in the region.
Social organisations and educational forums have condoled his death, remembering him as a lifelong champion of education whose influence extended far beyond the classroom. Colleagues described Professor Tikoo as a beacon of wisdom and learning, while former students recalled how his mentorship shaped their careers and personal lives. Many noted that his commitment to knowledge and service helped nurture generations of thinkers and community leaders.
Professor Tikoo’s work was marked by a rare blend of academic engagement and social activism. He played an important role in shaping public discourse on critical regional issues. In 2010, he was part of a significant interaction with Dr Radha Kumar at the Jammu Guest House, held under an initiative of the Indian Central Government aimed at exploring peaceful solutions through sustained dialogue with diverse groups in Jammu and Kashmir.
Deeply rooted in his hometown, Professor Tikoo served as President of the Prabandak Committee of Bijbehara for nearly two decades. He was closely associated with the reconstruction of the historic Cave Temple at Thajiwara in Bijbehara and was instrumental in the revival of the annual Yatra from 2008, an effort widely acknowledged for strengthening community bonds.
His death has left a profound sense of loss among those who knew him personally and professionally.
