Jammu, Jul 27: Minister for Forest, Ecology and Environment, Javed Ahmed Rana Sunday inaugurated the Eco-Stop building at the Gharana Wetland.

As per the official handout issued here, it is a significant step towards enhancing eco-tourism and strengthening conservation infrastructure besides reiterating Omar Abdullah led government’s commitment to protecting and promoting J&K’s fragile ecosystems.

Rana described Gharana Wetland as not just a wetland, but a living, breathing symbol of ecological balance and natural heritage.

He emphasized its critical importance as a globally recognized Important Bird Area (IBA).

He underscored that its preservation is not a luxury, but a “non-negotiable responsibility” that must be embraced by all sections of society.

“The future of our environment is being written by the actions we take today,” said Rana.

He said wetlands like Gharana are not merely landscapes but lifescapes.

“They nourish livelihoods, regulate water systems, safeguard biodiversity, and are key allies in our fight against climate change,” he said.

He commended the department of wildlife protection and lauded the creation of visitor-friendly facilities such as tensile sheds, viewing decks, seating arrangements and informative signage.

He said these initiatives reflect a forward-looking approach aimed at making the wetland an accessible, engaging space for students, researchers, tourists and local communities.

“The Eco-Stop is not just a building—it is a gateway to awareness, learning and collective stewardship. It will serve as a hub for environmental education, drawing scholars and birdwatchers from across the globe,” Rana added.

Referring to Gharana’s rich avian life, Rana highlighted the annual arrival of migratory birds such as the Bar-headed Goose, which travels from Central Asia to this serene habitat.

He emphasized that the presence of such species ties Jammu & Kashmir into the fabric of global ecological systems.

“These winged visitors remind us that nature knows no borders. Their arrival is both a marvel of nature and a call to action—for protection, for learning, and for pride in our shared natural wealth,” the Minister remarked.

Rana called for the integration of sustainable tourism models that uplift local communities while preserving the ecological integrity of the site. Gharana has attracted over 40,000 visitors last year.

“We envision Gharana as a premier eco-tourism destination—one that uplifts local livelihoods while inspiring environmental consciousness,” Rana said.

The minister extended heartfelt gratitude to departmental officials, field staff, local communities and all stakeholders whose dedicated efforts have contributed to the conservation of this “ecological jewel.”

He called upon officers of the forest department to intensify efforts through community-based conservation models, Rana stressed the importance of involving local stakeholders in protection, monitoring and sustainable eco-tourism efforts.

He called upon citizens, institutions, and youth to join hands in preserving Gharana Wetland for future generations.

“Let us make a collective pledge—today, here at Gharana—that we shall not let this treasure fade. It is our duty, our legacy, and our promise to the future,” he said.

Present at the inauguration were Chairperson DDC Jammu Bharat Bhushan, MLA Suchetgarh Garu Ram Bhagat, DDC Member Taranjit Singh Tony, PCCF & HoFF Suresh Kumar Gupta, PCCF (Wildlife) Sarvesh Rai and senior officers of the forest department
