Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Monday witnessed a brief exchange of sharp remarks after the issue of cross-voting in the recent Rajya Sabha elections resurfaced during the Question Hour.
Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary made a passing reference to the controversy, alleging that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had influenced “four votes” in the election. He suggested that certain aspects of the episode were “best left unstated”.
The statement prompted protests from BJP members, while legislators from the National Conference (NC) also made comments on the rival legislators. The exchange led to brief sloganeering before the House was brought back to order.
In a separate intervention, Peoples Conference (PC) chairman Sajad Gani Lone remarked that the controversy reflected a larger understanding between political parties, describing the episode as “match-fixing.”
The Speaker intervened to calm the legislators, after which the House resumed its scheduled business for the day.
