Srinagar, Jan 18: In a continued drive against illegal transportation and black marketing of essential commodities, Jammu and Kashmir Police intercepted a vehicle at Vilgam Handwara and seized approximately 750 kilograms of rice being transported illegally.
An official said that during routine naka checking at Vilgam, a police party noticed a suspicious vehicle and stopped it for checking. Upon inspection, the vehicle was found carrying a large quantity of rice without any valid authorization or supporting documents. The driver failed to produce any permit or proof regarding the lawful transportation of the commodity.
Accordingly, the consignment weighing about 750 kg of rice was seized on the spot, and the vehicle was taken into custody, official said.
He added that an FIR has been registered at Police Station Vilgam under relevant sections of law, and further investigation is underway to ascertain the source and intended destination of the seized rice.
Police advised general public to cooperate with the police and report any such illegal activities to the nearest police station.
