
Jammu, Mar 18: Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Jammu-Samba-Kathua (JSK) range, Shiv Kumar Sharma has issued a notice seeking video recordings, photographs, digital evidence or any information about incident related to assassination attempt on former Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah, from the people, including guests who attended the marriage function where it occurred on March 11.
DIG Sharma said that the public assistance to the investigating agency would greatly help in gathering relevant evidence and ensuring a transparent investigation.
On March 14, the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Jammu zone Bhim Sen Tuti had constituted a seven-member Special Investigation Team (SIT), under the supervision of DIG, Jammu-Samba-Kathua (JSK) range, to conduct a thorough investigation into the abortive bid on the life of National Conference president.
Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP) Range Headquarters, Jammu-Samba-Kathua, Jammu, while issuing a public notice on behalf of the DIG, stated, “A firing incident took place on March 11, 2026 during a marriage function at Royal Park, Greater Kailash, Jammu. In this regard, an FIR No 29/2026 has been registered at Police Station Gangyal, and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to investigate the matter.”
“All guests, who attended the said marriage function, members of the general public, or any person who may have video recordings, photographs, digital evidence, or information related to the incident are requested to kindly share the same with the SIT/Investigating Agency on 9419150173, 9419131379, 9419186210. Your assistance to the investigating agency will greatly help in gathering relevant evidence and ensuring a transparent investigation,” the notice read.
Notably the SIT, constituted keeping in view the seriousness and sensitivity of the case, has been asked to complete the Investigation promptly and thoroughly adhering to the statutory timeframe.
As per the Police, on March 11, 2026, while Dr Farooq, who was attending the marriage ceremony at Royal Park Banquet Hall, was leaving the venue at about 10.10 pm, an accused flashed a revolver and attempted to open fire from close range.
“However, owing to the prompt action of the Police personnel deployed with the protectee, the attempt was foiled,” the IGP Jammu said.
Police arrested the accused Kamal Singh Jamwal, 63, son of Ajit Singh Jamwal, resident of Purani Mandi and also seized the weapon.
Following it, a case FIR No 29/2026 U/s 109 BNS and Section 3/25 of the Arms Act was registered at Police Station Gangyal, Jammu.
A day after the assassination attempt, the city judge on March 12 sent the accused to five-day police remand.
On March 16, when he was again produced in the court as his 5-day remand ended, he was further remanded to 7-day Police custody.
