Police Inspector, Naib Tehsildar Among 9 Dead, 29 Injured in Massive Nowgam Police Station Blast – Alfaaz – The Words

Srinagar: A police inspector and a Naib Tehsildar were among the nine people who lost their lives in the massive explosion at Nowgam Police Station late Friday night, a tragedy that has plunged the region into deep grief.

According to officials, the blast occurred when a large cache of confiscated explosives stored inside the police station suddenly detonated. The material, suspected to be ammonium nitrate, had reportedly been shifted recently from Faridabad, Haryana.

Confirming the casualties, officials, as per news agency KDC, said that Inspector Shah Asrar Ahmad, associated with the State Investigation Agency (SIA), a resident of Muqami Shahwali Kupwara, was among the deceased. His death has sent shockwaves through the police fraternity, where he was known as a dedicated and upright officer.

Also among the dead is Naib Tehsildar Muzaffar Ahmad of Soibugh, Budgam, who had arrived at the station as part of an ongoing official procedure. A local tailor has also been confirmed dead, while other victims include policemen and members of the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team.

The magnitude of the explosion was such that several bodies were charred beyond recognition, with body parts recovered from houses nearly 100–200 metres away from the blast site.

Of the 29 injured, many are reported to be in critical condition. The wounded have been shifted to multiple hospitals, including 92 Base Hospital, SMHS Hospital, SKIMS Soura, and Ujala Hospital Nowgam, where medical teams are making all-out efforts to save lives.

Authorities have stated that a high-level inquiry will be launched to determine what triggered the detonation and whether safety guidelines for storing seized explosives were adequately followed.

As the identification process continues and rescue operations remain underway, officials warn that the death toll may rise further.
