
SRINAGAR: Ganderbal Police on Thursday detained two persons after a video showing unruly conduct at the Sonamarg tourist resort went viral on social media, prompting swift action to prevent any disruption of public order at the popular destination.
Police identified the detained persons as Mehraj Din Sheikh, son of Muhammad Sabir of Kullan, and Muhammad Arshid Mir, son of Sona Ullah Mir of Gund. Officials said the duo was found creating a nuisance that caused inconvenience to tourists and locals in the area.
According to the police, personnel from Police Station Sonamarg acted immediately after the clip surfaced online. The two were traced and apprehended without delay. Legal proceedings were initiated on the spot in accordance with law, and both were bound down for good behaviour. They were later produced before the Executive Magistrate First Class, Gund, for further action.
A police spokesperson said the district police is committed to maintaining a peaceful, orderly and harassment free environment across all tourist locations in the district, particularly in Sonamarg which receives heavy footfall during the season. The spokesperson added that any attempt to disturb public tranquillity or harm the tourism ecosystem will be dealt with strictly.
The police also issued an advisory urging tourists to report any harassment or inconvenience to the nearest police unit without delay.
Senior Superintendent of Police Ganderbal Khalil Ahmad Poswal said policing efforts will continue with enhanced vigilance at tourist sites and appealed to visitors and locals alike to cooperate in preserving the safety and decorum of public spaces across the district. [KNT]
