Addressing the 132nd edition of his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat, the Prime Minister said the past month had been marked by “excitement and enthusiasm” among cricket fans across the country. Referring to India’s triumph at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, he said the victory had filled citizens with pride and created a wave of celebration nationwide.

Turning to domestic cricket, the Prime Minister singled out Jammu and Kashmir’s landmark victory in the Ranji Trophy, noting that the team had secured its first title after nearly seven decades.

Describing the achievement as “unprecedented,” he said it reflected years of sustained effort and determination by the players. “It is most heartening that after such a long wait, the team has achieved this milestone,” he said.

The Prime Minister commended Captain Paras Dogra for his leadership, stating that his role was instrumental in guiding the team through the tournament. He also highlighted the performance of young pacer Auqib Nabi, whose 60-wicket haul emerged as one of the standout contributions in the competition.

Modi said the victory had generated widespread enthusiasm among players, coaching staff, and the public in Jammu and Kashmir, adding that such achievements go beyond sport and contribute to broader social momentum.

“This success will inspire many young people to take up sports,” he said, emphasising that the region’s youth stand to benefit from increased exposure and motivation.

He also pointed to Jammu and Kashmir’s growing profile as a sporting hub, citing the successful hosting of events such as the Khelo India Winter Games in Gulmarg. According to the Prime Minister, rising participation in sports like cricket and football reflects the region’s expanding sporting culture.
