SRINAGAR: The Union Government has informed the Rajya Sabha that permission granted for 50 MBBS seats to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence in Jammu and Kashmir was withdrawn after complaints and a surprise inspection found deficiencies, with affected students subsequently accommodated in government medical colleges in the Union Territory.

Replying to an unstarred question by MP Sajjad Ahmad Kichloo, Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Anupriya Patel said the application for establishing the medical college with an annual intake of 50 MBBS seats for the 2025–26 academic year was submitted to the National Medical Commission.

The first batch of students at the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence (SMVDIME), Katra, which had 42 Muslim students, triggered a row in the 2025 fall. The government de-recognised it after three months

The Minister said the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) of the NMC had invited online applications for new medical colleges and increased intake capacity through public notices issued on December 5 and December 19, 2024. Following due procedures, the Board issued a Letter of Permission on September 8, 2025, allowing the institution to admit students for the 2025–26 academic session.

However, after receiving several complaints regarding the college, the MARB conducted a surprise inspection. Based on the deficiencies observed during the inspection and subsequent deliberations, the Board decided to withdraw the Letter of Permission on January 6, 2026, the Minister informed the House.

To safeguard the academic interests of the students who had already been admitted, the government directed that they be accommodated in other medical institutions in the Union Territory as supernumerary seats.

Accordingly, the Jammu and Kashmir Board of Professional Entrance Examinations issued a notification on January 24, 2026, shifting the affected students to various government medical colleges in Jammu and Kashmir, the Minister added.
