SRINAGAR: A political row erupted after Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Youth Wing President Aditya Gupta criticised Divyani Rana, Vice President of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) in Jammu and Kashmir, for launching a campaign promoting the use of Sanskrit in Jammu.

In a post on social media platform X, Gupta condemned Rana, the daughter of late Devender Singh Rana, for “turning her back” on her father’s legacy. Devender Singh Rana was widely recognised for his commitment to preserving Dogri, the native language of the Dogra community.

“What a fall! A man who devoted his entire life to championing the Dogri language and preserving its rich heritage deserves far better than to have his legacy surrendered to @BJP4JnK’s cheap propaganda,” Gupta posted. “It’s tragic to witness late Devender Singh Rana ji’s own daughter turning her back on what he believed in.”

Gupta further alleged that promoting Sanskrit in the region amounted to cultural imposition. He claimed it undermines local languages like Dogri, Kashmiri, Gojri, and others, which have been nurtured by communities for generations. “These moves erode the Dogra culture, which Devender Rana had worked tirelessly to protect,” he added.

The controversy began after Divyani Rana shared a post announcing the launch of the “Sanskrit Home Name Plate Campaign” by the Shri Kailakh Jyotish Avim Vedic Sansthan Trust. The initiative was inaugurated at the residence of her late father, under the guidance of Mahant Rohit Shastri.

“Honoured that the Sanskrit Home Name Plate campaign… was launched from the home of Shri Devender Singh Rana Ji under the auspicious guidance of Mahant Rohit Shastri Ji,” Divyani wrote on X. “This innovative initiative… will normalise the use of Sanskrit in our daily lives and I hope more and more individuals across Jammu and Kashmir embrace our shared Sanskrit roots.”

She concluded her post with an emotive homage, “Jab tak sooraj chaand rahega, Rana Sb ka naam rahega”.
