SRINAGAR: The Electrical Inspectorate of the Power Development Department (PDD) has rolled out large-scale training sessions across all districts of Jammu and Kashmir to instil a safety-first culture in the power sector.
In the first phase, the initiative aims to train all linemen and contract workers engaged in the electrical system on basic safety practices. Since the launch last month, 780 linemen have already undergone training through theoretical sessions and hands-on demonstrations, with a focus on the use of safety gear and accident-prevention measures. Sessions have been held in Budgam, Srinagar, Pulwama, Shopian, Bandipora, Jammu, and Kathua, while the remaining districts are scheduled in the coming weeks.
Officials said the programme is part of a broader plan to institutionalise capacity building and pave the way for a dedicated Power Training Institute for employees across the UT. Principal Secretary PDD, H Rajesh Prasad, emphasised that human safety must remain the top priority, warning that no shortcuts would be tolerated during field operations. He directed monthly safety compliance reviews and submission of detailed reports from corporations.
The training also highlights the challenges faced by line staff, who often work in harsh weather and difficult terrain, particularly during emergencies. Officials cited the recent restoration of power during incessant rains in Jammu as an example of their resilience and commitment.
Conducted under the supervision of Chief Electrical Inspector Sanjay Sharma, the sessions are led by master trainers Anil Abrol in Jammu and Manzoor Ahmad and Adil Bashir in Kashmir. They are supported by other engineers and staff of the Inspectorate. Topics include accident prevention, safe handling of supply lines and apparatus, CPR procedures, earthing methods, and adherence to Standard Operating Procedures.
To encourage a culture of safety, the department also announced that linemen strictly following safety practices would be formally recognised and felicitated. Authorities said feedback from participants would be incorporated into future training sessions, with plans for collaboration with reputed national-level institutions to bring in expert trainers.
