Bandipora, Aug 29: Residents of Zadgai village in Tulail tehsil of Gurez in north Kashmir’s Bandipora district were left panicked after heavy rain caused a sudden rise in local rivulet.

Locals who spoke to Greater Kashmir said the water levels surged unexpectedly during the downpour, carrying wooden logs and muck downstream.

In videos shared with Greater Kashmir, distressed villagers can be heard shouting in fear and seen running for their lives.

Shabir Ahmad, a local resident, said, “The water levels suddenly rose and it was scary. We ran for our lives.”

Many villagers suspect a “cloudburst” may have triggered the flooding in the rivulet. However there was no major loss, or damage reported.

The incident occurred at around 6 p.m.

SDM Gurez, Mukhtar Ahmad, confirmed to Greater Kashmir that “There was no loss of life or injury, and no damage to houses.” However, he noted that the road leading to Zadgai village was partially damaged due to flash floods in the rivulet, which originates from the Kishanganga River.

“The situation is under control and there is no further threat,” the SDM added.
