SRINAGAR: The detained representatives of the Open Merit Students Association (OMSA) in Jammu and Kashmir were released on Sunday following what the association described as timely intervention by Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Srinagar Member of Parliament Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi.

In a statement issued shortly after the release, OMSA said it was “deeply grateful” to both leaders for stepping in to secure the freedom of the detained student representatives, who had been taken into custody amid protests linked to demands for rationalisation of reservation policies. The association said the intervention helped defuse the situation and ensured the students’ release without further escalation.

Confirming his release, Mir Mujeeb said he had returned home after spending the night in detention, describing the experience as physically exhausting but politically clarifying. He said the detention had only strengthened resolve among students to continue pursuing their demands through constitutional and legal means.

Mujeeb reiterated that the demand for rationalisation of reservations falls squarely within the framework of the Constitution and law, and said students would continue their campaign while adhering to established norms and procedures. He also acknowledged support from fellow students, particularly those who visited him after his release to check on his well-being.
