Locals said that a large number of fish were recently found dead in the spring, located in the Beehama area of Ganderbal district, sparking fears of water contamination and ecological degradation.

Residents allege that sewage from various parts of the town is being discharged directly into the spring. In addition, the water body is increasingly polluted with rubbish, including leftover food and polythene, thrown by both visitors and locals.

The degradation of Beehama spring reflects a wider environmental crisis in Kashmir, where several historic water bodies are facing decline due to encroachment, neglect, and unchecked pollution.

Bilal Ahmad, a local social activist, said the spring lies in the middle of Beehama market, making it vulnerable to dust and garbage accumulation. He noted that the absence of regular cleaning leads to the decomposition of leaves and waste, which may lower oxygen levels in the water and contribute to fish deaths.

He further said that he personally retrieved dead fish from the spring to highlight the gravity of the situation. “This is not normal. It could be a natural calamity or something else. The authorities must investigate,” he urged.

The spring, once known for its crystal-clear waters and abundance of fish, has long been a popular spot for residents and visitors alike.

According to locals, officials from the Fisheries Department, along with environmental experts, have already visited the site, collected samples, and taken photographs for further analysis.

Residents have urged the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and take immediate steps to restore the water quality of the spring.

The incident underscores growing environmental concerns in Kashmir, where wetlands, lakes, and rivers continue to face mounting pressure from pollution, encroachment, and climate change.
