SRINAGAR: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday called upon the youth to break free from self-imposed limitations and societal stereotypes, urging them to “challenge boundaries” in pursuit of personal and collective progress.
Speaking at a TEDx event hosted by JK Public School in Jammu under the theme “Beyond Boundaries,” the Chief Minister invoked the verse of poet Faiz Ahmad Faiz, “Chale chalo ki vo manzil abhi nahin aayi” (Let us keep walking, for the goal has not yet been reached), to inspire students to move forward fearlessly.
While acknowledging that some boundaries—such as legal and national frameworks—are essential, Abdullah warned against those formed by prejudice, fear, and outdated social norms. “We all encounter limitations. Some are beneficial to us, while many are not. These must be contested,” he said.
In a hall packed with students, educators, and fellow speakers, the Chief Minister challenged ingrained ideas about gender roles, learning environments, and personal insecurity. “Why should boys not cry? Why should girls not play football? What is the rationale for discouraging a student from asking questions?” he asked, terming these as “invisible barriers” that must be dismantled.
Emphasising that progress throughout history has depended on people daring to cross boundaries, he added: “Boundaries exist to be transcended. Every great exploration and civilisation’s advancement was born out of such courage.”
Omar also shared a personal reflection, admitting that despite his years in public life, he still struggles with anxiety when addressing crowds. “My knees continue to quiver and my hands remain unsteady,” he said, in a bid to normalise vulnerability and encourage self-belief among youth.
“You were not born to conform. You were destined to distinguish yourself,” he told the students, encouraging them to set high goals and speak without hesitation. “Never let someone tell you that your gender, ethnicity, or appearance will decide your future.”
The Chief Minister concluded with another Urdu couplet and a call for continued questioning and ambition: “Do not permit limitations to define your objectives. Do not permit them to hinder your aspirations.”
Other notable speakers at the event included eminent educationists Prof Amitabh Mattoo and Usha Mani.
