SRINAGAR: The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved two MCh seats in Neurosurgery at Government Medical College Srinagar, marking the first time such a super-specialty programme has been sanctioned for any medical college in Jammu and Kashmir.
Officials said the approval represents a major step in expanding super-specialty medical education at the institution and strengthening advanced healthcare training in the region.
The college began expanding its super-specialty programmes in 2021 with the introduction of two MCh seats in Urology. It later secured approvals for two DM seats in Neurology, followed by two seats each in DM Medical Gastroenterology, DM Cardiology and DM Pulmonary Medicine. The institution also received approval for two M.Ch seats in Paediatric Surgery, along with two additional seats in Urology sanctioned by the NMC in February 2026.
With the latest approval, the total number of super-specialty seats, including DM and MCh programmes, at the college has risen to 16.
The institution has also increased its academic intake at other levels. MBBS seats have been raised from 180 to 200 for the 2025–26 academic session, while postgraduate MD and MS seats have increased from 259 to 277.
In addition, the National Board of Examinations has accredited DrNB Thoracic Surgery and FNB in Paediatric Nephrology programmes at the college for the 2025–26 session.
Other courses introduced over the past two years include Post Basic BSc Nursing with an annual intake of 80 students, MSc Nursing with 25 seats per year, and a Post-PG Diploma course in Addiction Psychology with 20 seats.
