SRINAGAR: The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar has secured an Indian patent for its pioneering invention titled “Wear Measurement Test Rig for Fabric Industry and System Thereof.” The patent was officially granted on July 9, 2025.
The innovation is the result of collaborative research between the Mechanical and Civil Engineering departments at the institute. The team of inventors includes Prof M F Wani, Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department; Prof Rakesh Sehgal, former Director of NIT Srinagar; Dr Sheikh Shahid Saleem (MED); and Dr Vivek from the Civil Engineering Department.
The patented system is designed to offer improved precision and efficiency in the measurement of fabric wear. Its potential applications span textile research laboratories, quality control units, and commercial textile manufacturing.
“This innovation showcases the growing technological contributions of NIT Srinagar to both national and international research communities,” the inventors said in a joint statement, expressing hope that the system will significantly benefit the fabric and textile testing industries.
Congratulating the team, NIT Director Prof Binod Kumar Kanaujia called the development a proud moment for the institute. “It demonstrates how academic research can respond effectively to real-world industrial needs,” he said. Prof Kanaujia further added that the patented system opens the door for future industrial collaborations and potential commercialisation.
Registrar Prof Atikur Rehman also commended the inventors, noting that the patent reflects the dedication and talent of the faculty. “NIT Srinagar remains committed to fostering research that creates meaningful societal and industrial impact,” he added.
