SRINAGAR: The Prime Minister’s flagship PM Surya Ghar, Muft Bijli Yojana has made substantial progress in Jammu and Kashmir, with nearly 18,000 rooftop solar systems installed across the Union Territory, officials said.

The scheme provides free electricity of up to 300 units per month through grid-connected rooftop solar installations, aimed at reducing household power bills and promoting renewable energy use.

Official data shows that as of December 31, 2025, a total of 17,998 rooftop solar units had been installed, of which 16,284 have already been commissioned and connected to the power grid.

Subsidy disbursement under the scheme has also accelerated. The Central Government has released Rs 129.57 crore to 14,889 beneficiaries, while the UT Government has provided Rs 2.99 crore to 2,234 households.

To lower upfront costs, the subsidy structure offers a combined assistance of Rs 36,000 for 1 kW systems, Rs 72,000 for 2 kW systems and Rs 94,800 for 3 kW systems.

The programme is being implemented through a fully digital platform to ensure transparency and time-bound processing. According to official figures, 86,905 consumer applications have been received through the national portal.

To support implementation, 1,403 vendors have been empanelled across the Union Territory, with vendor–consumer agreements finalised in 11,779 cases. Financial institutions have facilitated access to credit, with 26,225 loan applications submitted and 16,186 loans disbursed at an interest rate of around seven per cent, covering up to 95 per cent of project costs.

The scheme is being monitored at the highest administrative level, with the Chief Secretary overseeing implementation. Jammu Power Distribution Corporation Limited and Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited have been designated as the implementing agencies.

In addition to central assistance, the UT Government has approved Rs 53.53 crore from its budget to support 85,000 residential beneficiaries during the 2024–25 to 2026–27 period.

Officials said awareness campaigns, technical training programmes and a grievance redressal mechanism have been put in place to ensure smooth execution.

Authorities said the initiative is expected to boost decentralised power generation, reduce reliance on conventional energy sources and support Jammu and Kashmir’s renewable energy targets.
