SRINAGAR: National Conference President Dr Farooq Abdullah on Friday urged party workers to maintain unity and discipline while stressing the need to introduce young and educated faces, particularly women, into active politics as Urban Loc

al Body and Panchayat elections approach. He made the remarks at Naseem Bagh during the party’s commemoration of Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah’s 120th birth anniversary.

Addressing the gathering, Dr Farooq said the organisation was undergoing changes to strengthen its base but regretted that “some of our own people are speaking against the party”. He reminded workers that “everything we have today is because of the party”.

He also defended the government’s performance, noting that expectations must remain realistic. “What can a government achieve in just one year when most powers lie with the LG? Even so, the government is making every effort to serve the people,” he said.

Calling for greater political participation by the younger generation, he said, “Our educated boys and girls need to step forward and serve their people. Only by empowering the next generation can we secure the future.”

Dr Farooq said the day was a reminder of Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah’s “mission to give voice to the voiceless”, adding that the progress witnessed today was rooted in the Sher-e-Kashmir’s “vision and courage”.

Senior leaders and party workers gathered to pay tributes, recalling Sheikh Abdullah’s contribution towards building Jammu and Kashmir. Floral offerings and emotional recollections marked the commemoration.

Advisor to the Chief Minister, Nasir Aslam Wani, said the day carried deep emotional significance. “It honours the leader who gave the people their voice and the right to speak,” he said.

Rajya Sabha MP Shammi Oberoi described Sheikh Abdullah as “a leader loved by all”, while MP Aga Ruhullah, in a post on X, highlighted his “unwavering commitment to justice, dignity, and the rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir”, calling on people to uphold those values.

The event was attended by CM Omar Abdullah, Dr Farooq Abdullah, Zahir Abdullah, Zamir Abdullah, Advisor Nasir Aslam Wani, and several senior leaders and MLAs.
