SRINAGAR: The ruling National Conference (NC) on Tuesday staged a protest outside the Jammu Kashmir Legislative Assembly, calling for the restoration of statehood and an end to harassment of Kashmiris in other states and Union Territories.
NC legislators carried placards bearing slogans such as “Restore Statehood” while urging the government to reinstate Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood.
Speaking at the protest, NC MLA Tanvir Sadiq said, “I think it is time for the restoration of statehood for Jammu and Kashmir.” Another NC legislator, Sakina Itoo, condemned attacks on Kashmiri vendors and asserted that statehood is a right that should be restored.
The protest comes amid ongoing demands by regional parties for the reinstatement of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status, which was revoked in August 2019, leading to its reorganisation into a Union Territory.
The NC has maintained that the restoration of statehood and protection of Kashmiri citizens’ rights are central to political stability in the region.
