SRINAGAR: Two teenage boys who drowned in the Tawi River near Nagrota on Sunday were recovered on Monday evening, while the search for a third missing boy remained underway.
The victims—Bavish Koul (15), Aditya Pandit (15), and Sonam Dutt (16), all from the Kashmiri Pandit community—were reportedly swept away by a strong current near Sainik School Nagrota on the outskirts of Jammu on Sunday evening.
A joint rescue operation involving police, NDRF, SDRF, Army divers, and local volunteers was launched soon after the incident. With the assistance of specially trained Army divers deployed on Monday morning, the bodies of Bavish and Aditya were retrieved and later shifted to Government Medical College Hospital, Jammu, for post-mortem examination.
Officials said the search for Sonam continued throughout the day but did not yield any results. The operation was later suspended due to fading light and will resume on Tuesday.
Preliminary reports indicate that the boys had been playing volleyball along the riverbank before entering the water for a bath, during which they were caught in the strong current.
Meanwhile, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed deep grief over the tragic incident. He also spoke to senior officials and reviewed the ongoing search and rescue efforts.
“The loss of young lives is heart-wrenching. My deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved families. We stand in solidarity with them during this difficult time,” he said.
