SRINAGAR: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday asserted that the results of the Nagrota and Budgam assembly bye-elections will not impact the stability of the Jammu Kashmir government, urging the public to actively engage in the democratic process.
Making his first campaign visit to Nagrota for the National Conference candidate, Abdullah stated, “The election will have no effect on the current administration. This poll is not about forming the government—it is already in place and will continue after the elections conclude.”
He emphasised that voters would have the opportunity to choose representatives either from the government to serve locally or from outside the administration. Abdullah’s speech was briefly disrupted by a sudden power cut, compelling him to continue without the use of a microphone.
Meanwhile, Advisor to the Chief Minister, Nasir Aslam Wani, told reporters that every election holds importance for political parties. “Whether it is a bye-election or a general election, Nagrota and Budgam have consistently been our strongholds. The people here have always supported the National Conference,” he said.
Wani expressed confidence in the party candidate, Shamim, highlighting her prior service and development work as BDC chairperson. “We appeal to the people of Nagrota to re-elect her and strengthen our development agenda,” he added.
Addressing questions on dynasty politics, Wani said, “Those raising concerns about nepotism should reflect on themselves. The BJP itself appears uncertain about its future leadership. There is a stark contrast between what they claim and what they actually do.”
On the ‘Vande Mataram’ controversy, Wani refrained from commenting directly, suggesting, “You should ask those who raised the issue. We will clarify our position when required.”
