SRINAGAR: CPI(M) leader and Kulgam MLA MY Tarigami on Wednesday called on the government to restore the social media pages of prominent Kashmiri news outlets Greater Kashmir, Rising Kashmir and Kashmir Life, which were reportedly taken down.

Tarigami described the move as “unfortunate” and stressed that freedom of the press is safeguarded under Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution, guaranteeing freedom of speech and expression.

He highlighted the role of credible and professionally run media organisations in providing verified information, especially during sensitive situations. “If there are objections to any report, authorities can seek clarification or use lawful remedies. Curtailing the platforms of established media outlets is neither constructive nor in line with democratic practice,” he said.

Referring to reports that the pages were removed following coverage of protests, Tarigami said media outlets have a duty to report ground realities. He warned that restricting established news platforms does not necessarily prevent misinformation and may instead allow unverified sources to circulate misleading content.

The CPI(M) leader also expressed concern over FIRs registered against MP Ruhullah Mehdi and others, urging authorities to ensure that dissenting voices are not suppressed and that lawful and peaceful expression is respected in accordance with constitutional guarantees.
