SRINAGAR: The Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) has intensified a Union Territory-wide traffic enforcement drive in Jammu and Kashmir, revoking 419 driving licences and suspending 469 others over the last three weeks as part of a crackdown on habitual and serious traffic offenders.

The special drive, launched on the directions of the Secretary, Transport Department, is being carried out by the Enforcement Wing of the MVD in line with decisions taken by the Multi-Disciplinary Committee on Traffic Management System in Jammu and Srinagar. The initiative aims to curb traffic violations and improve road safety across the Union Territory.

Officials said enforcement teams have stepped up checking at key locations, targeting offences such as over-speeding, wrong-side driving, overloading, driving without helmets or seat belts, illegal halting and juvenile driving. Action is being taken under provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

During the same period, the department also issued 1,024 cancellation notices to licence holders involved in NDPS-related cases, repeated traffic violations and other serious offences, signalling a zero-tolerance approach towards unsafe driving practices.

As part of a parallel focus on student safety, the department audited 174 school and college buses across Jammu and Kashmir. Buses found deficient were rejected and barred from operation until they comply with prescribed safety norms.

Officials said the enforcement drive is accompanied by extensive awareness efforts. A total of 676 road safety awareness camps, sensitisation programmes and public outreach activities were organised during the period to encourage voluntary compliance with traffic rules.

The Transport Department said such special enforcement drives would continue in the larger public interest and urged motorists to follow traffic laws strictly and cooperate with enforcement agencies to make roads safer.
